Into John Muir's lifeJohn Muir was born April 21, 1838 in Dunbar, United Kingdom. He had a rough start as a child because his father was a very strict man. He turned more to nature and writing as he got older and worked more in the land on his fathers farm. After studying at the University of Wisconsin for his studies took him all over the world to Europe, Asia, Australia, and Alaska. He was best known to the public as a great lover of nature and was a famous conservationist. He recalled his experiences in 10 books that he wrote during his life and prior to his dying from pneumonia on December 24th, 1914, while visiting his daughter he had amassed enough notes and information to write ten more.. In the course of Muir's life he helped found the Sierra Club, Yosemite National Park, Petrified Forrest and others.

Beneficial? Yay or Na?While John Muir's work in conservation and environmentalism was important, any contributions to science in and of itself are virtually non-existent. While primarily a writer with no real known scientific training, his work, if any, in the scientific field other than conservation and environmentalism are rarely mentioned or discussed.
A love for nature and love for the land has no need of training. Writing of books on ones travels and experiences, feelings, or beliefs also have no need of any formal scientific training. Primarily being known as an author, lover of nature, and founding member of clubs and national parks, with no real evidence, at least none that can be found without extensive research, that he did anything in the scientific field to truly benefit mankind,, John Muir should not receive and should not have the title of scientist. |
